Private Firearm Instruction in Chicago: When One-on-One Training Is the Right Call
Who benefits most from private handgun instruction, what a one-on-one session covers, what it costs, and how it fits alongside Illinois CCL training.
Group Classes Teach the Standard. Private Instruction Teaches You.
A group class has to move at the pace of the room. That is not a flaw — it is how a standard gets taught to twenty people in a day. But standards are general, and readiness is personal. The new owner who flinches at the first shot, the licensed carrier whose draw is slow and unsafe, the spouse who has never touched the firearm in the house: each of them needs something a roster cannot provide.
Private instruction removes the room. It is one instructor, your goals, and however long it takes to make the fundamentals honest.
Who Should Book One-on-One Firearm Training in Chicago
The first-time owner
You bought a handgun and it has been in a case ever since, because loading it in front of strangers feels worse than not carrying at all. A private session starts with an unloaded firearm on a table and ends with you handling it correctly, without an audience.
The licensed carrier who never really trained
Passing a qualification is not the same as being able to draw, decide, and stop. If your last live-fire was your CCL class, private instruction is the fastest honest way to find the gaps.
The couple or household training together
A second participant can be added to Standard or Extended private sessions for $25. Two people who share a home should share the same safety rules, the same storage plan, and the same understanding of what happens if the worst night arrives.
The professional with an unusual carry problem
Long shifts, specific clothing, a vehicle you live out of, a workplace with its own rules. Those are session-specific problems, and they are best solved in a session built around them.
What a Private Session Looks Like
Sessions start at 2 hours and $125, with additional hours at $75 each. There is no fixed script, but most sessions follow the same shape:
- Conversation first. What do you own, what do you carry, what worries you, and what does success look like when we finish?
- Safety and handling. Loading, unloading, clearing, storage, and the rules we never negotiate.
- Fundamentals. Grip, stance, sight alignment, trigger control — corrected in real time rather than in a group demo.
- Application. Drawing where appropriate, target discrimination, and judgment under realistic pressure, scaled to your level.
- A plan to leave with. Dry-fire assignments, a storage decision, and what to train next.
Live-fire content varies by skill level, and dry-fire work is used at the instructor's discretion. Sometimes the most valuable hour of a session never involves a round.
The goal is not to make you comfortable with a firearm. It is to make you competent with it, and honest about what you can and cannot yet do.
How Private Instruction Fits With Our Other Courses
Private instruction pairs naturally with the rest of the catalog. Many students book a session before their Illinois Concealed Carry class so qualification day is not their first serious range experience. Others follow the CCL class with private work on the skills the state never tests. And a household that trains together often adds Medical & Trauma Response, because the person most likely to need first aid in your home is someone you love.
Trust. Train. Triumph. In that order, always — because it's what's in the heart, not the hands.
